Leadership Matters
Successful leaders tell us what they wish they had known in middle school:
the value of unexpected friendship
the relief at being at to laugh at myself
the thrill of being proactive rather than protective
that I am the one who should define success for me
Middle school is a crucial tipping point in the ways girls perceive themselves and their relationships with others. Social pressure kicks in with full force during middle school, giving rise to all sorts of temptations and self-doubt. And research has shown that dealing with boys is only a small part of a girl’s middle school experience, and that girl-to-girl relationships are far more impactful.
At Athena's Path, girls practice using tools to help them stay true to themselves despite pressure to conform. Our girls know leadership in middle school has less to do with being class president or captain of the soccer team, and more to do with leading your own life by choosing what is right, rather than what is popular.
